Tua Hayes was born in Alabama in 1916 and studied art at Converse College in South Carolina. She moved to Wilmington, Delaware and in 1948 joined Studio Group, a non-profit organization whose members still meet to paint and study in the stimulating atmosphere of the former studio of famed artist and illustrator Howard Pyle, established after his death in 1911.
For over 50 years,Tua was active in art and community organizations. She was a valued member of Studio Group and served as president from 1954-56. She exhibited in numerous one-person shows and received prestigious awards for her work and her paintings are in private and public collections including:The Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, The University of Delaware, Converse College,Wilmington Trust Company, and the Bank of Delaware. Tua Hayes is listed in “Who’s Who In American Art” and in “Artists/USA.”
It is with great pleasure that Mispillion Art League & Josephine Keir, Ltd/The Petite Gallery present Tua Hayes – a Retrospective. This is particularly significant as Delaware Art Museum, in collaboration with arts organizations throughout the state, prepares to celebrate their 100th anniversary and commitment to preserve and exhibit the works of Howard Pyle. In memory of Tua Hayes, her family has established the Howard Pyle Endowment Fund to provide funding to Studio Group, Inc., to support ongoing maintenance, repair and future renovation of the Howard Pyle Studio buildings and grounds.
