Sponsored by the Village Improvement Association, A 1920s vintage Rehoboth Beach house (10 Fourth Street)  will be transformed into an updated and smart home for the modern family through the expertise of local and regional interior and landscape designers from Rehoboth, Baltimore, Washington DC, and New York. Josephine Keir and Taylor Wells are working on the Media/Game Room on the second floor.

The media room  lends itself to multiple functions: watching tv and board or card games taking place within the same area. A large, comfortable seating area allows  for viewing or conversation with friends in an area far away from the rest of the activities in the house.

Inspiration: The inspiration came from the blue skies, sea grass on the dunes, and the bleached boardwalks of Rehoboth.  We achieved this with a light “sky blue “ ceiling, woven grass cloth walls and bleached pine floors.  The rich colors of a hand woven Oriental rug, comfortable furnishings and beach/nautical inspired accessories complete the room.

Don’t Miss:  The sound proofing of the media room was achieved by the sound absorbent grass cloth walls, the wool Oriental rug, draperies and cotton fabric on the upholstered furniture.  The lighting/media is controlled by a master system customized for this space.  A power shade will block out the sunlight while watching movies and television  or playing video games.

Tua Hayes was born in Alabama in 1916 and studied art at Converse College in South Carolina. She moved to Wilmington, Delaware and in 1948 joined Studio Group, a non-profit organization whose members still meet to paint and study in the stimulating atmosphere of the former studio of famed artist and illustrator Howard Pyle, established after his death in 1911.

For over 50 years,Tua was active in art and community organizations. She was a valued member of Studio Group and served as president from 1954-56. She exhibited in numerous one-person shows and received prestigious awards for her work and her paintings are in private and public collections including:The Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, The University of Delaware, Converse College,Wilmington Trust Company, and the Bank of Delaware. Tua Hayes is listed in “Who’s Who In American Art” and in “Artists/USA.”

It is with great pleasure that Mispillion Art League & Josephine Keir, Ltd/The Petite Gallery present Tua Hayes – a Retrospective. This is particularly significant as Delaware Art Museum, in collaboration with arts organizations throughout the state, prepares to celebrate their 100th anniversary and commitment to preserve and exhibit the works of Howard Pyle. In memory of Tua Hayes, her family has established the Howard Pyle Endowment Fund to provide funding to Studio Group, Inc., to support ongoing maintenance, repair and future renovation of the Howard Pyle Studio buildings and grounds.

Don’t miss seeing this amazing body of work by one of the most respected names in the history of the arts in Delaware.

The Suzanis are the end product of a project employing primarily Hazara weavers using Central Asian hand spun wools and natural dye stuffs.This talented group of weavers specializes in high knot count work and those weavers/community  greatly benefit from this project. Like the embroidered textile Suzanis, these carpets display brilliant and unusual color, creating an exciting new art form to be treasured for generations.

James Opie is the author of Tribal Rugs A Complete Guide to Nomadic and Village Carpets. His first book Tribal Rugs of Southern Persia was published in 1981. James Opie was awarded the Joseph V. McMullan Award in 1993 for scholarly contributions in the field of Islamic textiles.

The gallery will be showcasing  IKAT design rugs during the month of May through mid June, woven with incredible Uzbek Ikat designs requiring a high knot count. These pieces capture the eloquence of great carpets from a glorious  weaving past. Characterized by the dynamic design itself, astonishing color and great quality wool, this project embodies the best of woven art. Hazara Afghan weavers utilize the finest hand spun Central Asian wools and natural dyes. Unique color combinations and unusual sizes make for very interesting rugs.  I hope our clients will  visit the gallery to view the lovely new additions to our collection.
